Feb. 24th to March 2nd is Freedom to Read Week in Canada, a time to reflect on our freedom to read whatever we choose, a right that is granted to us under the Charter. Did you know that the following books and other works have been challenged, that is, someone tried to take away your right to read/watch them?
Harry Potter series
The Handmaid’s Tale
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Bruno [movie]
Over the ages, many works have been banned, including works by Shakespeare and even the Bible! Take a look at this fascinating timeline from the Book and Periodical Council. For more info and ideas for how to celebrate intellectual freedom, see the Freedom to Read website!
